Turning Challenges into Opportunities: Behavior Management Strategies
Thursday August 6, 2026 2:45pm - 3:45pm CDT
This professional development session is designed to equip educators with a practical, research-based framework for understanding and responding to student behavior in the classroom. Participants will begin by developing a clear and shared definition of behavior, recognizing that all behavior serves a purpose and communicates a need.
The session will explore the functions of behavior, helping staff identify the “why” behind student actions, including attention-seeking, escape/avoidance, access to tangible items, and sensory needs. Building on this foundation, participants will learn how to apply the ABC model (Antecedent–Behavior–Consequence) to analyze behavior patterns and make informed instructional and intervention decisions.
A strong emphasis will be placed on proactive strategies to prevent problem behaviors before they occur. Educators will learn how to structure their classrooms, set clear expectations, and use environmental supports to promote positive behavior. The session will also highlight the critical role of relationship building, reinforcing that connection is often the most powerful behavior intervention.
Participants will gain practical tools for implementing positive reinforcement, including how to effectively recognize and strengthen desired behaviors in a way that is meaningful and sustainable. In addition, the training will provide actionable de-escalation strategies to safely and effectively respond to challenging behaviors while maintaining student dignity and classroom stability.
By the end of the session, participants will leave with a toolkit of strategies that can be immediately implemented to improve classroom climate, increase student engagement, and reduce disruptive behavior—because when behavior improves, everything else follows.
